The last leaf
Sue and johnsy were both training to be a painter. They lived in a little brick House at the adges of town. Johnsy had come down with pneumonia and stayed in bed, feeling very ill. Returning home after work, Sue was exhausted. How r u? Have u been coughing a lot ? Have u taken your medicine? asked Sue to johnsy,but Johnsy was too weak to respond. Sue and Johnsy were so poor they could barely afford food and medicine. All they could do was trying to sell some of their paintings. Johnsy stared listlessly out the window. There was some ivy on the opposite wall and she could see the leaves dancing in the harsh wind.
Sue:- What are you looking at?
Johnsy :- Just leaves
Sue:- What about them,Johnsy?
Johnsy:-They r just like me......
Sue:- Stop looking at them. U r nothing like them!( Distressed by Johnsy's notion,Sue closed the curtains )
Johnsy:- No Sue, don't do that , I want to see the leaves......( Sue ignored Johnsy's protests and closed the curtains anyway.
Johnsy:- When the last leaf withers and falls, I will die too.(johnsy sayed helplessly)
Doctor:- Hmmmm.......I don't know what to say .....
Sue:- What do u think Doctor,is there any hope she will get better?
Doctor:-I don't see much hope for the moment. She has no will to live.
Sue:- What? But isn't there anything I can do?
Doctor:-She must believe that she can live and get better. The best u can do now is give her hope and encouragement. That is the only medicine that can help her now.
Sue:- I understand (sigh)
Sue had to sit up day and night making illustrations for magazines just to make enough for johnsy's medicine. Johnsy layed in bed beside her and gazed sadly out of the window. 8,7, oh ........1 more Has Fallen................... 6.
Sue:- Johnsy,what r u doing?
Johnsy:- see, only 6 left now,When the last leaf falls I will die too.
Sue:- How can you say that? That's ridiculous ! You are not a leaf.
Johnsy:- The wind must be very strong outside. Two more have just fallen.
