I was alone in my apartment at 8PM. My dog, Loki; an Australian Shepard, was by my side on the couch. I live with my fiancé, but he 's currently at work. So I 'm home alone on the couch, waiting for my “Knight in shining armor” to come home. As I 'm watching the latest episode of Steven Universe,(Yes, I 'm a child. So what?) I hear a noise come from the front door. It 's too quiet to be able to tell what it is. Loki barks at anything that he hears out of the ordinary, so the fact he hasn 't moved puts me at ease. For now at least.
It 's quiet for a while. For the next few hours, I 'm sitting, watching TV. The noise I heard earlier has left my mind entirely at this point. I 'm so relaxed I start to doze off. For three hours, I hold my dog and stare into space. Then out of nowhere, I hear it again. It 's louder now. A lot louder.
I can tell what it is now. It 's the sound of nails scratching on the door. At this point, Loki noticed it too. He doesn 't bark like usual. He 's in between whimpering and growling. Like he 's scared, but knows there 's danger. I find this weird, because this dog isn 't afraid of anything. I stay silent. I hadn 't noticed it yet, but I was holding my breath. It 's times like this I hate living here. I 'm on the fourth floor of my complex building, so jumping out the window is out of the question. We also don 't have a peephole, so I can 't check to see what 's on the other side of the door without opening it.
I then have the idea
HI DEAR
PIECE ONE — BY ANA’S SON, ADAM
There are many things that scare us; o en it is only a temporary
fear, the kind of fear that fades a few moments later. Such is the case
with horror lms, or skydiving, and other such things. However, there
are many things that truly scare us; the events and conditions in our
lives that not only make our hearts race with fear, but days later still
keep us awake at night and shorten our breath whenever we think of
them for years to come.
My mother lives with one such condition. rough no fault of her
own, she has cancer. It is simply something that happened, and it is
killing her. What surprises me, however, is that although I know she is
afraid, she ghts this lethal disease every moment of every day, and she
does it with a smile. Not only that, but she hasn’t let it slow her down
either; she engages in many of the activities that she did before the
infection, even if it drains her of her strength. My mother ghts for her
life every day. She ghts against nature itself not only for herself, but to
be there for all those she loves, and who love her. She is an inspiration
to us all, for she is a real hero.
PIECE TWO — BY ANA’S DAUGHTER, MONICA
When I was twelve, I was told my mother was diagnosed with
cancer. I knew that she had gone through it before, but I couldn’t
understand why it was in our lives again. Many say that everything in
your life, good or bad, happens for a reason, but sometimes you can’t
see why.
I was young and sel sh. I thought that this wasn’t fair, that it
couldn’t happen. I still do at times, but now, years later, I’ve learned that
even the bad things that happen in your life should be embraced. It is
the bad things that help us grow and become our own person. I do not
consider myself a strong person, standing next to my mother.
My mother is my creator, my life. Even through her pain she is at
times in a better mood than I am in a er a bad day. A bad day to me
consists of a bad morning and a bad hair day. But next to my mother,
I know she would give up anything to have that be her worst day. Day
a er day, my mother gets up with a smile and still has the strength to
be a mother to me. She is my counselor, my teacher, and my best friend,
even through her pain. I know I’m young, but I know I will never catch
up to my mother’s faith. She is my idol; I see her through new eyes
every day. She is the person I look to for the strength to never give up.
