Answer:

Joan of Arc or Jeanne d'Arc is a saint of the Roman Catholic Church. Joan was made a saint because she was killed for her belief that God was guiding her. Joan's bravery and faith are still remembered today.

Teenager!

What do you think about teenagers? Do they seem bossy? Are they too worried about how they look? Some teenagers only think about themselves, but did you know that a teenager called Joan of Arc led troops into battle, was put in prison, and had been killed, all by the time she was 19?

How It Started

Joan was born on a farm in Domremy, France in 1412. She led a normal childhood, but by the age of 12, Joan was having visions. Visions are when people see things that other people don't see, and Joan saw visions of angels and saints.

Joan of Arc Praying

The Hundred Years' War had begun in 1337 because the English wanted to rule France. France fought to defend their country, but as Joan grew, the English were in control. Joan had visions where saints came to say that that Charles VII, the French king who had not been crowned, should be in charge of France. Joan was determined to act upon these visions, and fight to make the English leave.

Joan and Robert de Baudricourt

When Joan was 16, she wanted to visit the King of France and offer her help in defeating the English. Joan could not go alone, and went to see a soldier called Robert de Baudricourt to ask for his help. Joan told Robert of her visions and said she was the only person who could help France be free from English rule. Baudricourt thought Joan was lying, but Joan did something that changed his mind. Joan said that the French were going to lose the Battle of Rouvray near Orleans, even though everyone thought they would win. A few days later, when Baudricourt found out Joan's prediction had come true, he believed God was speaking to her and agreed to help.

Battle

As Joan traveled to meet the king in Chinon, she wore men's clothing and cut her hair short as a disguise. The king agreed to let her go into battle with his men. Joan knew she had to be brave, she carried a flag instead of a sword and encouraged the soldiers to fight hard for God and for a French king. Even though Joan did not fight, she was in the middle of the battle and was injured by both an arrow and a crossbow bolt.
