Since before I could speak, I loved cats. My parents were not animal people. But my brother convinced them to get me a kitten for my 12th birthday. They told me my father needed something at his office but instead drove me to the SPCA. When they pulled up they told me about my gift. I burst out laughing for a good five minutes. I don’t know what elicited that reaction but I felt overwhelming joy and it had to burst out some way. My parents wanted a female kitten and they didn’t have any at the SPCA that day but I took the first female kitten we came across. She was black and white, which wasn’t my favorite color combo then (but it is now) but I wasn’t taking any chances that the offer would be rescinded. The cat hated me for the first five years (largely because I kept picking her up every 30 seconds) but eight cats later (5 black and white) still best birthday gift ever. My second best birthday gift was another cat, Stormy, whom I got for my 30th birthday.
