He was born in a traditional music family. On August 15, 1947, the day India got Independence, Bismillah Khan performed at the Red Fort. This had a symbolic meaning that there lies a feeling of harmony between Hindu and Muslim. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 2001.

Bismillah Khan was born as the alternate son to Paigambar Khan and Mitthan. He was named Qamaruddin so that his name would sound analogous to the name of his elder family, Shamsuddin. Bismillah Khan began his career by playing in colourful stage shows. He got his first major break in 1937 when he played as a musicale at the All India Music Conference in Calcutta. This performance brought Shehnai into the spotlight and was monstrously appreciated by music suckers. He also went on to play in numerous countries including Afghanistan, the USA, Canada, Bangladesh, Iran, Iraq, West Africa, Japan, Hong Kong and the colourful corridor of Europe. Bismillah Khan sewed up shehnai recital in the thepost-independence period and kept the heritage of classical music alive with his recitals. Bismillah Khan not just stressed Hindu- Muslim concinnity but was also a living illustration of the same. Though he was a pious Shia Muslim, nothing could stop him from worshipping the Hindu Goddess Saraswati. Also, there's an intriguing tale which narrates the maestro’s possible commerce with Lord Krishna Himself!
