The most important house is the one that you have, the one you're living in. Everyone has a different “important home.”

We live in our homes so we fill them with memories. Time and energy spent in a house will help to elleviate the importance of the property. We eat, sleep, feel safe, laugh and cry in our homes and that makes them really important to us. They become part of our identity.

If you don't believe me watch the homeowner interviews on the news after a storm comes in and wrecks their properties. The owners are crushed and many say “I've lost everything I don't know how I can go on.” They even claim they will rebuild and try to once again capture what is lost.

In the United States, if the first home of importance is the individual's residence, I'd say the second would be the White House. Again it is because of the history of the property and because it houses the head of one of our branches of government. It represents the country and therefore it is a reflection of all who live here.

It is so American that the Presidents actually live in the house that they work in. It suggests that we are hoping for leaders who are good examples of domestic tranquility and that we understand the importance of having the government represent the people. We put the Presidents closer to the people by having them live in the “house of the people.”

One of the coolest things I heard over the recent years was when Michelle Obama described how inspiring it was to tuck her girls in at night in a home that African slaves had built. She said it inspired her to see how far we had come and reminded her how far we still have to go. Obviously the White House is so important that even who designed it and who built it gets added to the history of what happened there. It's an old house and frequently needs work but it is a testament to a developing country.
