Dangers associated with tobacco smoking have been known to people for a long time. But it has only been established recently, the risk to others, when one smokes in public. This is also known as passive smoking. Nicotine and other trace chemicals present in tobacco smoke is known to cause lung cancer and heart disease.

There are two types of smoke which someone standing next to a smoker might inhale – sidestream smoke and mainstream smoke. While sidestream smoke is smoke released from burning end of a cigarette, mainstream smoke is what is exhaled by the smoker. This kind of second-hand smoke has the same effect on human bodies as it has on direct smokers.

The threat from tobacco smoke is so serious that authorities have come out with a string of serious actions like fine and jail term for smoking in public.
