Answer:

We live in a society where cars are everywhere, there are more cars on the road nowadays than ever before, with an even greater amount of drivers. Some drivers are more cautious than others, while some like to text or drink alcohol. Both of these activities, while driving, can impair the driver’s vision and carry penalties. The national legal blood alcohol level is 0.08% and in 39 states texting has been banned. Consuming more than the legal limit of alcohol or texting while driving can lead to a motor vehicle accident that could come at the price of a life. The sad thing is that these lives being taken every day could have been saved if people would not use their cell phones or have alcoholic beverages and drive. Despite advertisements against both dangers, most people still feel that even though they know how dangerous it may be, nothing will happen to them, which allows them to believe it will be all right if they continue these behaviors. Texting and driving is becoming more popular, especially with teenage drivers, with over 11,000 deaths nationwide last years alone. Studies show that while reading a text one’s stopping distance increases by 36 feet, versus sending a text which increases the distance by 70 feet. If a person text and drives their chances of getting into an accident automatically increases by 23% and 60% of America’s drivers admit to using cell phones while driving. It takes the average person about 5 seconds to text someone and for those 5 seconds the driver’s eyes are off the road it allows them to travel the length of a football field, given speeds are 55mph and over. Stronger laws, tougher enforcement, and good consumer education has helped reduce the amount of alcohol related motor vehicle accidents by over 30% from the 1980

Being male. Teenage boys, especially ones with male passengers, are involved in more car crashes than teenage girls. However, the number of females involved in car crashes is increasing.6

Social norms. Risky driving among teenage drivers is higher among teens who report that their friends drive in a risky manner.4,7

Often, several of these risk factors are present: In particular, teens who text while driving are more likely to have other risky driving behaviors as well, compared to those who don't text while driving. These additional risk factors include drinking and driving and not using a seatbelt.8 In addition, young drivers who own their cars may take more risks. They are more likel

y to speed, especially at night, and have two or more teen passengers with them.6

A positive factor for teen drivers is the presence of an adult passenger. One study showed that teen crash rates were 75% lower when an adult was in the car.4
