The Envious Neighbour
Once upon a time in the old days, there lived an honest man and his wife with their pet dog. He cultivated his small field and lived off the little produce with honesty. They had a decent house and kitchen with a small garden. It was observed by his neighbours that his dog was very faithful and caring towards his master. He would always protect his house from thieves, and his crops from animals and the man loved and treated his dog very well.
One day, the dog sniffed something and started barking unusually. When the man noticed, he saw the dog was indicating toward the tree. The man dug up the tree and found a treasure in its roots. The treasure changed the man's life and made him extremely wealthy. The honest man's neighbour was a nosy and jealous man. He was always frustrated to see the modest man happy with his decent life while he was always trying to make happiness by earning more. Knowing of this incident, one night the envious neighbour sneaked into the man's garden and killed the dog and buried it in a grave under his pine tree.
The next day, a disease hit the village. Suddenly, all the fields were infected and crops were dying. No one could understand why this curse fell upon the village. The news reached the prince's palace. He ordered an investigation. The officers found out that the origins of the disease could be traced to the envious man's pine tree. It was withered, his cherry tree dead, and all trees and flowers in his garden down to ashes. When they dug the area up, they found the dog. The man confessed his crimes and everyone realized it was the result of his wrong deeds that had affected the village.
Moral: live virtuous lives.
