Kanyashree Prakalpa is one of the best distinguished initiatives taken by the Government of West Bengal. The Department of Women Development and Social Welfare, West Bengal formulated the Kanyashree Prakalpa - a conditional cash transfer scheme with the aim of improving the status and well-being of the girl child in West Bengal, by incentivising schooling of all teenage girl_s and delaying their marriages until the age of 18, the legal age of marriage.

This scheme has been implemented in all districts of the state. This scheme has also been internationally recognised by the UNICEF and the scheme has won the UN Public Service Award in 2017. This scheme is expected to bring about improved outcome for the education, health (especially infant and maternal mortality) and empowerment of the state's girls, their children and a huge number of benefits for larger society. August 14 is observed as "Kanyashree Day" to promote the scheme throughout the state.
