It is defined as sum of all emissions of CO2 (carbon dioxide) released into the atmosphere as a result of the activities of a particular person, organization, community or nation.

It
cannot be calculated accurately because we have inadequate knowledge and data about the complex interactions between contributing processes.

It is measured in terms of tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). This carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) allows the different greenhouse gases to be compared on a like-for-like basis relative to one unit of CO2. CO2e is calculated by multiplying the emissions of each of the greenhouse gases by its 100 year global warming potential.

The most common way to reduce the carbon footprint of humans is to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse.

Carbon footprint is a measurement of the amount of carbon dioxide that each person contributes to the total amount of carbon dioxide produced by all human activities in a given time. Usually, a carbon footprint is calculated for the time period of one year. You can't see your carbon footprint but it affects the environment. A large carbon footprint negatively affects our planet.

We should all aim to reduce our carbon footprints and ideally make our carbon footprint zero. Some ways of reducing our carbon footprints are:

1. Switch off electrical appliances after use so that we reduce the burning of fuels and, consequently, reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the air.

2. Use blankets and warm clothes instead of heaters to stay warm, thereby conserving electricity.

3. Minimize the use of air conditioners to save electricity.

4. Conserve water to reduce electricity used by water treatment plants.

5. Conserve paper to prevent deforestation as trees decrease the amount of carbon dioxide in the air.

6. Use public transport and car pool to reduce the use of fuels that emit carbon dioxide.

7. Walk or cycle to nearby places to reduce the use of fuels.

8. Plant and conserve trees.

9. Use compact florescent light bulbs or LED lights to save electricity.

10. Recycle and reuse all that you can as producing new things requires more fuel to manufacture and this produUces more carbon dioxide.
