It is the United Nation’s flagship program to deal with environmental issues like global warming, environmental pollution, marine pollution, etc. World Environment Day has the participation of over 143 countries. Every year a new theme is allotted which is adopted by various parties for the celebration and events.
The idea of World Environment Day emerged from a discussion over the integration of human interaction and the environment, held during the Stockholm conference on the Human Environment in 1972. Henceforth the United Nations General Assembly established World Environment Day as an annual and global event.
The first World Environment Day was held in 1974; two years later it was established. The theme for the 1974 World Environment Day was ‘Only One Earth’. The celebrations of World Environment Day are being annually held since 1974. Beginning from the year 1987, a host country is chosen, which the center of World Environment Day activities becomes for that year.
The theme for the World Environment Day 2019 was “Beat Air Pollution” and the host country was China. The theme was specifically chosen as the environmental pollution claims some 7 million lives annually.
World Environment Day is a major global event that advocates the protection of the environment by bringing together, governments, non-government organizations, individuals and communities, etc. It is indeed very essential that it is continued being celebrated every year with increased zeal so that we would be able to revive our environment in its purest forms.
