I've heard similar phrases about fire before. That's probably because fire can be both good and bad. My dad caught me playing with matches when I was seven years old. Also almost burned down the coffee table in the living room, as well as living room. He immediately spanked me for doing something so dangerous. Afterwards he sat me down and explained that I shouldn't ever do this again! That fire wasn't lovingly or mean but fire was blind and very hungry. He went on to say that fire ate everything in its path regardless of what or who it was eating. Then he pointed towards my mother and sisters saying that fire wouldn't stop eating simply because someone I loved was hurting. That it would continue to eat them and the entire house including all of my toys and even our family dog. That was enough to scare me into being obedient and respecting fire in general. He was right of course fire didn't have preferences or concerns. It would simply eat anything in its path. Its a tool and when used for evil purposes works well. It can also be used for good, fireplace burning on a cold winters night. Fire can function as both good and evil and must be controlled so it doesn't wrongly eat something that you'd rather not see gone!
