You often hear parents saying that they wish their child would read. Without access to a good library and a parent who reads as well, that is not going to happen. Now is as good a time as any to get that library membership and get your kids interested in some books, believes Radhika Sathe-Mantri, Co-Owner, Cosy Nook Library, Koramangala. “This is a time that parents will have to get involved. Read with them. Read the books they are reading so that you have a way to strike up a conversation on the book with them. This is also a great time to learn a new writing form.”
Mantri also suggests that if your child is interested in perhaps poetry, short videos on how to write things forms like Haiku are available online. Going through small tutorials can pique the interest of children and they can take things forward from there. Hint: Put a cap on screen time.
Turn to Nature
It’s true that advisories are warning against large gatherings outdoors, which was a common sight with children in the summer holidays, but there are ways you can still let your children enjoy the outdoors.
Puja Gurung, Founder, Honey Bees Nature Club which organises outdoor activities for children all year round suggests you place a mat on your balcony or terrace, along with a pillow, or simply sit by a window. “Have kids look around them and observe the birds they see, the insects around them, the sounds they hear, the clouds that pass by and write all this down. This is a safe option at times like these, and still gives your child a chance at being outdoors, something they should not be denied.”
Puja also suggests getting them involved in gardening. This can be started in any space – from a window sill, to a balcony to a terrace. “All gardening supplies can be ordered online and you can start growing things from the food in your kitchen.” Keep in mind that those that are not organic may not work, but most do. “Let children get creative with takeaway boxes, empty bottle and yogurt cups to fashion little pots. Get them to take responsibility for their plants. Gardening helps boost their natural immunity and gives them their time outdoors as well.”
