What is Global Warming?
Global warming is created by a number of factors. As more chemicals and pollutants enter our atmosphere, these gases trap heat above the earth’s surface and lead to an increase in temperature. Many adverse effects are already taking place:
The impact of global warming means that the polar ice caps are melting. Animal species such as polar bears and seals are dependent on sea ice, and are increasingly endangered as a result of climate change.
Melting polar ice caps are also linked to a rise in ocean levels; cities and countries near the coast are under threat, and may become flooded and uninhabitable in the future.
Summers will become hotter, and weather patterns around the world will shift, leading to a change in how crops will grow. If crops fail, many more people in India and around the world will go hungry.
How to Stop Global Warming
Once your children understand the negative effects of global warming, hopefully they will want to make a positive difference. Here are just a few easy suggestions on how to prevent global warming with your kids.
Walk, Cycle, or Use School Buses
Private car usage pours loads of emissions into the atmosphere. Instead of taking a short drive to the store, can you walk or cycle instead? Or is there a bus or metro that you can take? Can your little ones take the school bus to school? If everyone walked, cycled, or used public transport instead of driving cars, the amount of air pollution into the earth’s atmosphere would be greatly reduced. Not to mention walking and cycling are both great exercise for you and your kids!
Carpool or Share Journeys Together
If you do have to drive a car, combine trips with your neighbors or relatives. Driving a car with only one or two people in it is much more wasteful than if four or five people can make the same journey – and you can save a little money on fuel at the same time!
Use Less Energy
The less energy we use in our own households, the less carbon dioxide we emit into the atmosphere. Encourage your kids to switch off the radio or the television if they’re not using it. Turn off unnecessary lights, and open the curtains to bring in natural light during the day. Air conditioning is also a huge energy drain – see if it’s possible to use a fan instead. There are ways to save energy while doing the laundry, too!
Don’t Rely on Electronics For Entertainment
Our Kids Today project explores the issues that are facing today – and we know that children these days love watching DVDs and playing games on their computers or tablets. But the more they rely on electronics for entertainment, the more their energy usage and carbon dioxide emissions will increase.
Encourage your children to entertain themselves in other ways – getting some fresh air and exercise by playing outdoor games , unleashing their creative potential with arts and crafts , or learning and being entertained with reading and writing.
Use Less Water
Water conservation is a very important issue for our environment, with some regions of India suffering from a lack of clean water. Global warming may also increase the risk of drought in these regions, so your family can help by reducing your own water consumption.
Make sure your children turn off the tap when brushing their teeth, take shorter showers, and don’t run your washing machine or dishwasher when they’re only half full. With just these few changes, your kids can make a positive impact on the environment and understand that they, too, can do many things to stop global warming
