It became popular after it was documented in detail by the Hindu priests who originally practiced yoga. In India, Yoga has been adopted as a way of life rather than a form of exercise.

People practice yoga for spiritual, health, and meditative benefits. A combination of different postures or Asana forms the essence of yoga. There are 84 asanas in traditional yoga, but the estimate could go up anywhere from 400 to 1000 if we had access to all the scriptures that documented yoga.
