Raja Rammohan Roy

Rammohan Roy, the pioneer of modern India was born in the village of Radhanagar of Hooghly district in West Bengal in 1772. His father Ramkanta Roy was a zamindar and his mother Tarini Devi was a virtuous lady.

Since his boyhood he had faith in religion and was very brilliant and was endowed with a good memory. He became well versed in Bengali and French language in his early youth. In later he also learnt Sanskrit, English, Hindi, Hebrew, Latin, Greek etc. languages. By studying different sastras ultimately he came to the final conclusion that God is one and absolute and he had no physical existence or form. He had no faith in the caste system and an Orthodox system of religious belief. He declared that worship of infinite Brahmma is one and only worship. For this his father ignored him as his son and he was disinherited from his property.

After that, he formed a new society called "Brahmma Samaj". He devoted himself to eradicate all superstitions relating to Hindu religion. During that time, a woman married at a tender age would have to burn herself with her dead husband on his funeral pyre and accept 'Satee'. This cruel and inhumanity custom was known as "Satidaha Pratha". Rammohan, the great social reformer with the help and co-operation of the Governor-general Lord Bentink eradicated this sinful and evil custom. Besides that, he fought against child marriage and dowry system. He wrote many books in Bengali, English, Arabian language.

During the time when he was alive the Mughal emperor of Delhi was Akbar the second. For soliciting the favour of the British Govt. on behalf of the Mughal emperor he was crowned with the title, Raja. This untiring worker and a great social reformer breathed his last in the city of Bristol, England on 27th September, 1833.

Dear Ritu,

I have just received your letter. I'm worried to know about your health. It's going to 3 days you are ill.

I would suggest you to take medicines in time to time. Besides, you should follow a balanced diet chart everyday for a good health. It will give you strength to recover soon. Do you know, research is saying that a good food habit can make a healthy life ? You have a very bad habit to eat junk foods, fast foods instead of healthy foods containing proteins, vitamins etc. You should have a glass of milk everyday. Without a healthy life how will you achieve your goals, how will you study hard ? Now you are in class XI. Please now take care of your own health. You know very well what is wrong and what's right. So why do you choose wrong for you willingly? You have to be prepared for higher studies. So build a good food habit from today.

No more now. I'm thinking to visit you tomorrow. Take care.

Yours ever,

Trisha
