Swami Vivekananda
Swami Vivekananda was born at Simulia in Kolkata on 12th January 1862. His earlier name was Narendranath Dutta. He belonged to a traditional Bengali family and was one of nine siblings.His father, Vishwanath Datta, was an attorney at the Calcutta High Court. His mother Bhubaneswari Devi was a house wife. Swami Vivekananda was interested in spirituality and used to meditate before the images of deities. At his time he was the only student to receive first-division marks in the Presidency College entrance exam. He had prodigious memory and the ability of speed reading. In 1881 he met Sri Ramakrishna. He became Sri Ramkrishna's disciple after his father died in 1884. Swami Vivekananda represented India and Hinduism at the Parliament of the World's Religions at Chicago in 1893. The way he started his speech, "My sisters and brothers of America", won the hearts of all present there. After Sri Ramkrishna's death,Swami Vivekananda decided to convert a dilapidated house situated in Baranagar, Howrah, in West Bengal, into a new math (monastery) for the disciples of Sri Ramkrishna which is known as Belur Math. He also founded the Ramakrishna Mission. On 4th July, 1902, at the age of 39 years, this great personality passed away leaving a mark of his spiritual teachings.
