Respect is about how you approach someone or something. By respecting something you can give that thing it's rightful place in this world. Every interaction is a transaction of some kind and respect helps prepare your body-mind to receive most fruitfully. Its about you, it's not about the other.

I don't think respect, even for inanimate things, is a problem, I think the problem is some of us humans are selectively respectful. That's why we get stuck in money, food etc. If we respect the body, we will eat right. If we respect the food, we will savour it's flavour. If we respect a child, we share it's joy. If we respect someone, they show their best self to us.
