Private moneylenders of the district give Rs150 crore as crop loan to 75,000 small and marginal farmers in the kharip season for paddy crop. Moneylenders charge monthly interest rate of 5 to 10% on the lent money. These farmers are neither approached by nationalized or rural banks of the district, nor they themselves approach any bank due to cumbersome documentation process.

There are 2,03,957 farmers in the district, out of which 1,79,139 are small and marginal farmers. Land holdings of small and marginal farmer is up to five acre (2.5 hectare) and 24,818 farmer are big farmers having land holding of more than five acres. There is 1,90,400 hectares of cultivable land in the district and out of it 1,75,000 hectares are under paddy cultivation.

Every year, banks give crop loan to farmers for paddy cultivation. This year, the leading bank has set total target of Rs237 crore for kharip crop loan to cooperative, nationalized and rural banks operating in the district. Till now, Bhandara District Central Cooperative Bank has disbursed Rs153 crore as kharip crop loan against a target of Rs130 crore to 73,000 farmers in the district. 16 nationalized banks operating in the district have disbursed Rs38 crore (43%) as crop loan against the target of Rs88 crore and Vainganga Krushna Regional Rural Bank has extended credit of Rs16 crore against target of Rs15 crore. Nationalized and rural banks have given crop loan to 31,000 farmers. In the district, I0,4,000 farmers availed facility of kharip crop loan from cooperative, nationalized and rural banks of the district .

The remaining 75,000 small and marginal farmers are also engaged in paddy crop production, but without financial backup of the banks of the district. Their sole source of loan is moneylenders operating in the villages.

Average land holding of small and marginal farmer is 2 acre, so 75,000 farmers take paddy crop on 1,50, 000 acres of land of the district. Per acre expenditure of paddy crop from sowing to harvesting is Rs10,000.

Moneylenders' loan to farmers is cumulative and not reducing. Similarly, there is pre-harvest loan system, in which farmers borrow money from moneylender or from their relative at the time of sowing on the condition of repaying loan in the form of paddy or rice at the rate fixed by moneylender or relative and he has repay it at that rate after harvesting though there is higher rate for paddy or rice in the market, he incurs loss but he is bound to repay it at the lower rate

There is a very intensive relation between moneylenders and illiterate farmers.
Farmers grow the crop on the land of peasants. Peasants are the owner of the land but farmers are the cultivator of the land.
Moneylenders provide money to farmers and Peasants for growing crop. This is the advantage of the moneylenders.
But there is a disadvantage that they take high interest from the farmers .
When the crop fails the farmers are no longer able to pay money back with the high interest.
In such an oppressive condition the farmer have only one way that is suicide.
Because of this reason many of the farmers suicide.
To stop that our government has launched new scheme.
According to it money is provided to the farmers without any interest.
Hope this helps.
