River plains are known as cradle of civilizations. Not only in India but all over the world almost all ancient civilizations were situated on the banks of fertile river plains. This can be said about Indus valley civilization in India.
India continues to be an agrarian economy in 21st century also! More than 60% population is still dependant on agriculture and allied activities. Rivers provide much needed water for agriculture and other industries also. Frequent flooding of rivers bring in new fertile soils which makes these basins more suitable for agriculture compared to other areas. Ganga basin and fertile regions of Krishna Godavari are some examples.
In mineral rich areas like Singbhum plateau, Karnataka plateau all major industries use rivers as main source of water. e.g. Damodar river
Also river basin areas of Damodar, Godavari, Narmada are known to have major coal deposits in India.
Major hydroelectric projects are located on dams built on these rivers. Some waterfalls on rivers are also potential hydroelectricity sources like Jog falls on Sharavati river.
They are also important source of drinking water for both rural and urban India.
In Hindu mythologies many rivers are revered as Goddesses. This is because of the importance hold in people's lives.
