MAN IS BORN FREE BUT EVERYWHERE HE IS IN CHAINS

Rousseau, a famous French philosopher, wrote “Man is born free; but everywhere he is in chains” in his most illustrious work “The Social Contract”. Like all the other living beings on earth, man was also born free. But why is he in chains everywhere? This is mainly because of the constrictions he inflicts on himself and which are enforced on him by others. To live in harmony with the fellow beings, man has to follow the traditions and customs of the society. And these chains are associated with all the stages of man’s life.

Let us start with the childhood phase. We feel that the child is absolutely free from all problems and is not in chains. But that is not the case like we think. Let us consider that a kid is interested in cricket, but his mom may want him to take up skating classes, his dad may want him to take up abacus classes and his grandparents may want him to take up classical music classes. And apart from these extra classes, his parents force him to study hard to score the highest possible marks. Oh my! Poor little kid!

A similar situation arises when it comes to choosing one’s career. I would like to share an incident which happened to one of my friends. After her schooling, when she had to decide her career, she was forced to go for medicine by her parents though she was interested in fashion designing. And I am sure that you would have experienced or come across numerous such incidents. In these cases, the freedom of expression is lost.

Another type of chain which is prevalent these days is the silicon chain. By silicon chain, I mean the obsession towards the mobile phones, iphones, smartphones and similar gadgets. My parents must have said a zillion times to keep my mobile phone away at least for 5 minutes and give some rest to my tired fingers. But I couldn’t stop myself from playing games or texting my friends on the cell phone. Let me tell another example. A person takes his family out for a dinner and that’s when his cell phone rings. His boss calls him up regarding a serious issue and that he has to get back to office immediately. He couldn’t refuse and is bound by his workplace chain. So he has lost his personal space and time.

There is another classification of chains which are inevitable to live in harmony with others and to maintain equality. Let us take the school example again. When in school, one has to obey the rules and regulations of the school. A student will be fined for coming late to school or for being in improper uniform etc. But these rules are essential to maintain certain discipline among the students. Similarly, in workplace too there are certain rules to be followed. But they are vital to maintain a positive work environment.

There are chains in the form of rules almost everywhere. Even on the roads! We see signs “Do not drink and drive”, “Do not use cell phone while driving”, so on and so forth. But just imagine what would happen if such rules were not imposed. In such situations, there is a necessity for such chains.

Man is definitely in chains everywhere and these are essential for him and others to live harmoniously. But these chains should not curb his freedom of action and expression like in the examples I shared where the kid and my friend were not allowed to do something of their interest. I would like to conclude with the famous lines from Rabindranath Tagore’s work, Gitanjali.

“Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high…

Where the mind is led forward by thee: Into ever-widening thought and action

Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake”.
