The story, "The Best Christmas Present in the World" portrays the truth of war and peace. Jim is at the border, fighting the Germans, while his wife Connie is waiting for him at home. The average soldier does not start wars. In fact Jim was a school teacher, while the German soldier was a cello player. War disrupts people's lives and forces them to fight for the country even though they themselves have no reason to fight. Christmas holds the same cheer for both the fighting sides. In fact the soldiers even sit together, talk and share food and drink on Christmas. They enjoyed even the few hours of peace and friendship, but war continued after that. War is therefore, not a decision of the soldiers at the frontline, but a political decision taken by others who are completely away from the borders, safe in their homes. When the nation wins, the credit goes to the politicians, but war leaves behind a trail of misery. Mrs. Macpherson has spent so much time waiting for her husband to come home that she has lost her memory. Even though peace returns, the pain of war cannot be undone.
