Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is also called as the Clean India Mission or Clean India drive or Swachh Bharat Campaign. It is a national level campaign run by the Indian Government to cover all the backward statutory towns to make them clean. This campaign involves the construction of latrines, promoting sanitation programmes in the rural areas, cleaning streets, roads and changing the infrastructure of the country to lead the country ahead. This campaign was officially launched by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi on 145th birth anniversary of the Mahatma Gandhi on 2nd of October in 2014 at Rajghat, New Delhi.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a campaign which aims to cover 4041 statutory towns to clean the streets, roads and infrastructure of the country. The campaign was launched by the Prime Minister himself by cleaning the roads in Delhi. Its inaugural proved one of the biggest campaigns when millions of students, employees and citizens participated in the even, cleaning various localities. Modi exclaimed “Is cleaning only the responsibility of the karamacharis? Do citizens have no role in this? We have to change this mindset.” He asked all the citizens including celebrities, sports legends and business tycoons to join the campaign.
Shri Narendra Modi had invited nine public figures: Mridula Sinha, Sachin Tendulkar, Baba Ramdev, Shashi Tharoor, Anil Ambani, Kalam Hasan, Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra and Team of Taarak Mehta ka Ooltah Chashmah- to make a contribution towards Swachh Bharath, share the same on social media, and invited nine other people to do the same, hence forming a chain. He has asked people to share their contributions on social media
