Indians chose to live together, in spite of their diversity. India’s diversity is not an issue; on the contrary the fact that Indians are unified in spite of the diversity is what you should be looking at.

The reason why Indians are so divided on the basis of religion, color, language etc. is because we all are actually different. Natives of Rajasthan are very, very different than those in Tamil Nadu. In fact, people of France and Germany are likely to be less different than Indians from various parts of the country.

So why should this difference be spotted as a problem? People rejoice their languages and religion for the sake of respect for their tradition; but at the same time they are tolerant enough to accommodate everyone in their country.

The paragraph : Why are we Indians so divided on the basis of religion, caste, color, language? Why can't we be just Indians?

There are two families - one family has many differences and therefore they often have conflicts, but they still live together; the other family used to fight a lot and they finally decided to separate. Since they are now separate, the other family doesn’t fight anymore. Which family do you think is more fundamentally strong?

The family that chooses to stay together in spite of the differences!

Instead of looking at India as a country and then judging why there are so many differences, it is a better approach to look at so many differences and then ask, “how come all these people are a single country?” In comparison, Europeans too are a highly diversified lot. There are people speaking English, French, Spanish, German and Italian among others, who are geographically very close to each other.

You know what’s the difference between Indians and Europeans? Indians chose to live together, in spite of their diversity. India’s diversity is not an issue; on the contrary the fact that Indians are unified in spite of the diversity is what you should be looking at.

Don’t buy what the media is trying to sell you, about why India is becoming intolerant.

Indians are different; yes - but they are all Indians.
