And these shows provide a sense of 'connectedness' with their own lives, thus allowing them and giving them the pleasure of feeling connected with these stars, even though that is far from the truth. But compared to the fake and dramatic shows that are sometimes too extravagant or exaggerated, these reality shows become an escape from such entertainment. People these days are more into the real and truer version of these people's lives, thus, the preference.
