In 1770s white Americans were confined to the Appalachian plateau. They moved to the Mississippi valley by 1830s. They expanded beyond Mississippi by 1850s. By 1920s they spread all over the US. The expansion of the settlers led to the displacement of the local tribes. The settlers cut down and burnt the forests to clear the land for cultivation. They erected fences around the fields. They practised agriculture on an extensive scale. But it was at the expense of the grasslands and forests. They continued to move further west to explore new lands and raise new crops. After 1860s they reached the Great Plains across the River Mississippi. They started growing wheat there and the region became a major wheat producing area.
