They insisted the farmersto grow opium in India because opium is the Opium is the dried latex obtained from the opium poppy and it is the medicinal plants so they bought the opium from farmers at the lower rate and sold it on a higher rate on tje other countries and this led to increament of profit of the East India Company.

In the late 18th century the English East India company was buying tea and Silk from China for sale in England. to become a popular drink and by 1813 , 30 million pounds tea was being imported into England .

The tea could be brought only by paying in silver coins or bullion because the manuchus rules of China were unwilling to allow the entry of foreign goods merchant Therefore looked for ways to shop the loss of silver .

They searched for a commodity they could sell in China , something they could persuade into China . While the English cultivated a taste for Chinese tea , the Chinese became addicted to opium .So under these circumstances ,the British insisted on farmers growing opium in India to balance their trade with China.
