Every year World Environment Day is celebrated on 5th June to raise awareness about environmental causes. The day is observed globally by the governments and other interested parties in collaboration with the United Nations. World Environment Day is being observed since 1974 to raise the issue of environment protection.
The celebration and events give us a chance to think about the issues concerning the environment like pollution, overpopulation, global warming, etc. Unless we take notice of the damages to the environment and take preventive measures, it would not be possible to handover a friendly environment to our coming generations.
The day seeks to involve governments, communities, and individuals in the fight for saving the environment from degradation. People are reached out and educated about factors affecting the environment. They are told how their simple conduct can be helpful in saving the environment.
Each year a particular theme is assigned around which the events are centered. World Environment Day also advocates the 2030 sustainable Development Goals. SDG 14 and 15 deal with the protection of ecosystems underwater and on the land. It also deals with sustainability using marine and terrestrial resources.
