Answer:
I believe in putting others before myself. Helping out people in a time of need, not only makes you feel good, but it can truly change someone’s life. People want to be reassured when facing hard times. Being selfless shows compassion and respect for those around us. I have applied this to my life because of those who have taken time to help me out in my time of need. I believe that those who put others before themselves will be rewarded with gratitude and will have the ability to influence others around us.
About a year ago, I went through this depression phase. I didn’t feel like hanging out, going out, or talking to anyone. It seemed as if so many bad things had just happened all at once. All I wanted to do was lie in bed, do drugs, and sleep. At that time in my life I was experiencing death, relationship problems, and lack of friends. My best friend had just died in a traumatizing accident and the guy whom I loved decided he didn’t care to be with me any longer. I really needed someone to be there for me. I had never known what it felt like to lose someone close to me, that I loved, by death and it was one of the worst feelings I had ever dealt with. I didn’t think I would ever move on or get over it, but it’s amazing what one person can do for you. That is when my life- long friend, Emma, decided I needed help. She put me before everyone else, including herself. She came and saw me every day after school and on the weekends until I was back to being myself again. I never got fully over it, but I learned to move on and do things for other people rather than just for myself.
My point is: the more you do for others and the more you do things larger than yourself, the happier you feel. It can help guide you to the right things in life. Even though sometimes it’s tough to be selfless, you just have to try your hardest. Those that put others before themselves are genuine people, who truly care. This is very important to me and I always try my hardest to be there for my friends or anyone who I think needs someone. It is a nice feeling to be appreciated, but it’s even better when you are helping someone in the process.
