Megasthenes is considered the first European traveller to arrive in India. Megasthenes docu mented his experiences in the Indian subcontinent in his book Indica. Here, Megasthenes writes about the people of India, and the customs and traditions they follow. In fact, Megasthenes had visited the court of Chandragupta Maurya as a Greek amba ssador. He admired the strength of character displayed by the Indians, as well as their honest and upright behaviour. Megasthenes observed that Indians did not care for written contracts nor business deals. They could be taken by their word; such was the extent of their honesty. Megasthenes himself admired the beauty of the Ganges and Sindhu. Although there were ins tances of floods during monsoons, Megasthenes reports in his book that the roadways and infrastructure then were good. There were a lot of amenities for travellers. After all, India is a land of diverse cultures and languages, united by a singular thread of traditional wisdom, as well as the earnestness and simplicity of the people.
