Sun Temple, Konark
It’s a great pity that the main temple, built in the thirteenth century CE, was lost a long time ago. Yet what we see of the surviving ruin (pictured above), the jagamohana or audience hall, is impressive enough. The entire stone structure was built in the form of a horse-drawn chariot, an inspiration drawn from Hindu mythology, in which Surya, the sun god, is depicted riding across the sky on a chariot. The scale of the temple is immense: the 24 chariot wheels are nine feet in diameter and the jagamohana is over 100 feet high.
Aside from the jagamohana, the structures that have survived include the dance hall and the dining hall. The entire edifice is carved with stunning intricacy. There are fantastic sculptures everywhere you look – the finely wrought chariot wheels, the reliefs of musicians, the panels showing scenes from daily life and the famous erotic sculptures. These form the backdrop of the Konark Dance Festival held at the complex every December.
Open daily, 6am to 8pm.
Getting there: If you’re travelling from Bhubaneswar, the best way to get to Konark is by road. The town is under two hours away from the state capital.
