For centuries mankind has been developing means of destruction. However, until the middle of the XX century weapons operated in local space and in local time. The power of conventional weapons is enough to destroy a building or ten humans in just several seconds or minutes. So, this kind of weapons is dangerous for individual humans and buildings but not for humankind and civilization.
If we examine chemical and biological weapons, we find that their range of destruction is greater. Chemical and biological weapons can affect a large area (tens and hundreds square kilometers) and kill hundreds and even thousands of people. Chemical and biological agents remain active over many weeks and months. Moreover these weapons can damage gene and cause mutations. So these weapons operate over a large area and a long period of time.
However, these estimations are valid only in case of sudden attack against unprotected people in favorable weather conditions. And the efficiency of these weapons can be reduced. There are two points to be made here. First, special protective suits and medicine can protect people from chemical and biological agents. Secondly, any chemical substance or micro-organism can be destroyed by another chemical substance either by heating or by some kind of irradiation (for example, ultraviolet). Moreover, chemical agents used in warfare may be destroyed by environmental factors such as water, air, sunlight, high and low temperature, among others.
Of course, damage from using chemical and biological weapons may be very great, and tremendous efforts may be required to overcome the after-effects of these weapons, not to mention the numerous human sacrifices. Unfortunately, unscrupulous politicians, militarists and irresponsible scientists seek for new chemical and biological weapons which penetrate protection masks and closes. The most horrible achievements of this kind can kill hundreds thousand of people. That makes chemical and biological weapons even more danger for people than nuclear one. So we can consider these kinds of weapons as weapons of mass destruction, so these weapons must be destroyed throughout the world. But all the same, means of modern science and technology enable us to hope that people finally can localize and completely neutralize all chemical or biological weapons.
However, the power of nuclear weapons is extraordinary even as compared with chemical and biological weapons, to say nothing of conventional weapons. The main problem is that modern science and technology allow us to control nuclear weapons only before use. After a nuclear explosion has occurred, noone and nothing can control them. First, unlike all other kinds of weapons, no effective means of protection from nuclear explosion exist. The area of destruction depends on several factors such as the kind and capacity of nuclear device, the altitude of explosion and others. I will not cite concrete data, but it is quite clear that near the epicenter nothing can remain unharmed. The blast produces large-scale destruction over an area of tens and hundreds of square kilometers. The thermal and light radiation causes numerous fires over a distance of kilometers. Nuclear radiation causes numerous deaths and diseases among the population. Electromagnetic impulses halt the operation of electronic equipment especially means of communication. At last, after some delay (from several hours till several months) the radioactive dust falls and damages a large area (depending on the kind of nuclear device and altitude of explosion it can happen over a distance ranging from kilometers to thousands of kilometers from the explosion). Even a country with a developed and powerful economy can find itself in a very difficult position even after only one nuclear strike. Moreover, the shock after nuclear attack causes serious depression in society.
So at last we must destory all weapons to save mankind
