In the year 1861,civil war broke out in the USA on the issue of emancipation of slaves.In 1863, before the end of the war,slavery was abolished and the black people were set free.However, the black people did not enjoy equal rights in the southern states of the USA.They suffered discrimination-they had to go to separate schools;they were made to sit in the back seats of public buses;and,in many places they were not allowed to vote. The black population, generally, was poor.
The whites in the southern states were determined to keep things that way by Martin Luther King Jr. was equally determined to change things.So,in the 1950s and 1960s,he led the the Civil Rights campaign based on non violence. It was Gandhi who inspired King to adopt the Peaceful means to protest in this struggle for equality.Martin Luther King Jr. and his supporters had to face great challenges and sufferings. So in recognition of his peaceful struggle,King received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. But in 1968, he was assassinated by a white. His death was mourned by many people around the world as Martin Luther King Jr was a man who died for a good cause.
