Mrinalini Sarabhai was undoubtedly one of the best classical dancers of our times. She was well-versed in Bharatanatyam, Kathakali and Mohiniattam from professionals in their field. She was married to Dr Vikram Sarabhai who spearheaded the ISRO. Although the marriage was a troubled one, he encouraged her passion for dancing. Her daughter Mallika Sarabhai followed her footsteps to become a dancer. In 1949, she set up the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts. She was the recipient of both the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards. Mrinalini Sarabhai also won the Kerala Government’s annual award – Nishagandhi. She passed away at the age of 97 years in 2016.
