P.T. Usha was born as the second daughter of Lakshmi Amma and Paithal on

20th May 1964 in the village of Payyoli, Kozhikode dt., Kerala. She has been

associated with Indian athletics since 1979. She showed unusual talent from

her childhood. She was good at her studies too. She reached her peak level

under the coaching of Nambiar. She won two silver medals in 1982 New DelhiAsian Games and four gold medals and one silver medal in 1986 Seoul Asian

Games. She participated in 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and missed the

bronze medal in 400m. hurdles by 1/100th second. She has been

the recipient of many national and international awards and

recognitions. The Government decorated her with the Arjuna award in 1984

and Padma Sri in 1984. She was chosen the best woman athlete in the 1985

Jakarta Asian Athletic Meet. Usha was conferred the Best Asian Athlete

Award in the years 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1989. She was also

honoured with the World Trophy for the best Athlete during the years 1985

and 1986. She was rightly called “The Payyoli Express’.​
