Five persons were killed when an aircraft on a test flight crashed in a crowded Mumbai suburb this afternoon, police said. Those killed include two pilots and as many flight engineers on board, besides a pedestrian in the Ghatkopar area where it crashed, police said.
The King Air C90 12-seater aircraft, which took off from the Juhu airstrip, crashed in the Jagruti Nagar area of Ghatkopar, police said. A team of officials of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) have rushed to the crash site for an investigation, an official said.
Police, fire brigade and disaster management teams have rushed to the spot. Bodies of those killed were taken to the nearby Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar, an official said.
A fire brigade official said, “Our control room got a call at 1.15 pm informing a plane crash. Our jawans were immediately rushed to the site to launch the rescue operation. Four fire engines and as many water tankers were rushed to douse the fire that occurred after the plane crashed.” The police have cordoned off the area, an official said.

Kolkata, Sep 3, 2020 : 48 passengers and two members of the crew died when an Indian Airlines Kolkata-Delhi bound Boeing carrying 110 passengers and eight members of the crew crashed before landing. The plane was on its way from Kolkata to Delhi. Just before landing its direction was changed and it hit a gigantic tree. One of the wheels broke and the aircraft crashed from its middle catching fire instantly.
Firefighters rescued the survivors who were severely burnt and sent to the nearest hospital. The dead bodies were so violently burnt that it was impossible to identify. The Minister of Civil Aviation arrived the spot without delay and ordered a judicial enquiry of the accident. He spoke to the reporters and nullified any possibility of sabotage.
The Minister announced a compensation of Rs. 5 lacs to the widow and 2 lacs each to the nearest relation of the deceased and 3 lacs each to the persons injured in the crash.
