As we all know that the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on 28th April 2019 had issued a weather warning affirming that Cyclone Fani would convert into a harsh cyclonic storm. This caused heavy rainfall in Kerala and moderate and light rainfall at north coastal parts such as coastal Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Preceding Fani's landfall, authorities in Bangladesh and India moved as a minimum one million people each from regions within Fani's expected path into cyclone shelters and onto higher ground, which is supposed to have decreased the ensuing death toll and casualties. Fani killed around 89 people in Bangladesh and Eastern India and caused about 8.1 billion dollars in damages in both Bangladesh and India, majorly in Odisha, India. According to the Indian govt. meteorological department (IMD), Cyclone Fani has been categorised as an “Extremely Severe Cyclone” (ESC), and is the 10th such cyclone to strike India in May in last 52 years. Also, it is one of the fiercest cyclones to have struck India in the past 20 years, Storm outpourings and strong and fierce winds reaching 125 mile/hour blew off roofs, uprooted countless trees, and damaged power lines. However the worst-impacted state, Odisha, had been successful in holding the numbers of affected people and loss of life to a minimum. This was the outcome of a very effectual stratagem of quick responding and disaster preparation. The United Nations (UN) office for Disaster Risk Deduction (DRD) and other organisations had hailed the Indian govt. and volunteer efforts which had made sure the destruction levels was kept to a minimum. Considering the power of the cyclone, it was incredible that much lives were not lost.
