The festival of Uttarayan marks the day when winter begins to turn into summer, according to the Indian calendar. It is the sign for farmers that the sun is back and that harvest season, Makara Sankranti/Mahasankranti, is approaching. This is considered one of the most important harvest days in India as it also marks the end of winter and the beginning of the harvest season. Many cities in Gujarat organize kite competitions among their citizens.
In this region of Gujarat and many other states, Uttarayan is such a huge celebration that it has become a public holiday in India lasting two days.[1] During the festival, local food such as undhiyu (a mixed vegetable including yam and beans), chikki (sesame seed brittle) and jalebi are served to the crowds.[2][3] Days before the festival, the market is filled with participants buying their supplies.

- KITE FESTIVAL IN GUJARAT
21st September, Gujarat: Several variety of different kinds of kites enhanced the beautiful sky during the kite festival in Gujarat. The Gujarat Youth Corporation organized the kite festival and was held in XYZ field. People enthusiastically participated in this kite flying competition.
There were different kinds of kites of different sizes and shapes. Some had shapes like birds like pigeon, parrot and some were like eagles. Some kites were also decorated with tiny lights.
A person from Odisha was the winner of the competition. He was able to keep his kite for the longest time among all in sky. The winner was then given a gift hamper with small amount of rupees.
"All the participants played well and I appreciate their eagerness for the competition. And congratulations to the winner!" says the leader of Gujarat Youth Cooperation.
Overall, the kite festival was successfully done and people watching the competition and enjoying the festival also enjoyed a lot.
