7 Punjab pilgrims killed as landslide hits Manikaran gurdwara

Shiva Narain, 1 March 2020

  • After the land slide struck Gurdwara Manikaran Sahib in Kullu district on Tuesday afternoon, at least seven pilgrims from Punjab were killed and many others injured. On the banks of the Parvati River,  where the gurudwara was situated, a huge boulder crashed and buried many people alive. At least 15 pilgrims were injured in the incident
  • "There was a huge rush of pilgrims in the gurdwara and its area when the landslide occurred", said Thakur Chand, the sarpanch in the nearby village of Gadagi. Reports suggested that the boulder struck the gurdwara in the lounge hall (community kitchen), and the serai room.  (accommodation) of the gurdwara. A multi-storey building near the river bank was also damaged.
  • Rakesh Kanwar, Kullu Deputy Commissioner said that seven bodies had already been removed and a rescue operation was underway. "We clearedd up the spot and and the search operation is on', he said.
  • The injured have been admitted to the regional hospital in Kullu, he said. More than 300 SSB, NDRF,  Home Guard, ITBP, police and fire personnel are engaged in the rescue operation.
  • Two of the 11 injured people were referred to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh according to Sharma, Medicinal superintendent at the Kullu Regional Hospital.
  • The police have restricted traffic movement to Manikaran Sahib so that relief and rescue operations are not hampered. The site has been cordoned off fearing more rock slips from the hilltop.
