A severe earthquake occurred about 9 kilometers away from a village named Chabari in Bhachau taluka of Kutch district. The magnitude of this earthquake was recorded at 7.7 on the Richter scale. Thousands of people were killed by this earthquake. It is estimated that more than 20,000 people were killed and more than 1.5 lakh people were injured by the earthquake. The earthquake caused huge loss of life and property.
This earthquake occurred at a point located 300 to 400 kilometers away between the Gujarat Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate. The time of occurrence of the earthquake was around 8:45 am. Major districts of Gujarat such as Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Surendra Nagar, Surat, Banaskantha and Patan were among the areas affected by the earthquake.
