To spread awareness about eye donation, free camps were organised at Govind Ghat and Vandey Matram Kunj on Friday where team of doctors from Himalayan Hospital gave insights into who can and cannot donate eyes and the time constraints to be followed by the family members of the deceased for the process of the donation. The visitors to the camp had their doubts cleared and pledged to donate their eyes on death. In a joint collaboration, Muskan Foundation and the Himalayan Hospital Eye Care Unit organised the camp.
Addressing the participants, Dr Anuradha said that any person (man or woman) of any blood group can donate their eyes on their death to the blind.
“The corneal blind people can be benefitted by this. The cornea from a dead person must be removed within six to eight hours of the death. It takes just 15 to 20 minutes to remove the cornea from the deceased’s eyes, resulting in no distortion on the face,” said Dr Anuradha.
She exhorted the participants to register themselves at the nearest registered eye bank for the donation.
Asked whether the people who use spectacles or those who have their eyes operated upon can donate eyes, she said that there is no restriction on them as far as donation of eyes is concerned.
People down with diabetes, high blood pressure and even asthma can also donate their eyes, she said, adding that weak eyesight does not come in way of eye donation.
“Only a person afflicted with Hepatitis B, C or AIDS cannot donate eyes,” she averred.
The president of Muskan Foundation Neha Malik said that it is a noble act to donate eyes. “When a person donates his or her eyes two are benefitted in equal measure. Our scriptures have spoken volume of ‘Netra Daan’ terming it as ‘Maha Daan”, she said.
