Condition of Indigo cultivators:

  • Indigo farming in Bengal was documented in 1777 when the Frenchman Louis Bonnard brought it to the Indians. Apparently he became Bengal's main indigo cultivators.
  • He started cultivation in Taldanga and near Hooghly in Goalpara. Because of British hegemony in the Bengal area, indigo planting has proven to be more and more economically advantageous owing to the European demand for blue dye.
  • It was built in Birbhum, North 24 Parganas, Burdwan, Bankura, and Bangladesh's large sections. The indigo farmers encouraged the farmers to grow indigo as an alternative to the food crops.
