In 1919, during the time of Rowlatt satyagraha, the police attacked a peaceful procession. In response to this, there were widespread attacks on police station etc. So the Britishers imposed Martial law and General Dyer took command. On the day of 13 April, 1919, some people came to attend annual Baisakhi fair as they were anaware of the new law. General Dyer entered the area, blocked exit points and opened fire on the people inside, thus killing hundreds.
