National Highway Causing Woes

Itanagar, the capital city of Arunachal Pradesh, is yet again facing problems because of the national highway (NH 415), which is still under construction. The highway, which is a major artery to the capital city is creating several road blocks since part of the traffic has been diverted to reduce the traffic jams towards the city. The mayor of Itanagar, Mr. Sangam Mitra, told our reporter that it was only during the tourist months that the city has this stress. He requested people to wait patiently for a few more months for the road to finish construction.
The NH 415 was an ambitious plan of the central government in order to develop the north-eastern states especially Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, and boost the economy through tourism and communication. But an estimated 10,000 people had been rehabilitated to make way for the hgihway which angered local tribes. With land limitations in the area, the construction has ignited several NGOs for the indifference of the government.
