Report on the development and impetus given to the cause of female education in colonial period:
Before the British, Temples and Madarsas served as the centres of learning. After the British advent, new centres of learning emerged i.e the missionaries. In India, the women were not given education because of number of reasons, fears and ill beliefs. It is believed that if a girl is educated, her husband would die soon after her marriage.
Some girls were allowed to learn how to read and write before their marriage but were withdrawn from education after marriage. The Zenana system of education was prevalent among the upper caste Hindus and Muslims.
The Purdah system did not allow women to take formal education outside the home, and there were not many female teachers to teach them at home. The Christian missionaries felt that the Zenana system can be used to spread western ideas by educating women.
The British and the Christian missionaries opened many schools for girls. The educated middle class men wanted their wives to be educated. The Woods despatch formalised Zenana system to educate women. Meanwhile, the social reformers too promoted the importance of women education. Slowly women started entering schools and they began to get educated.
