government launched a bicycle project under which it plans to give bicycle to every school going child in the state. The state Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee coined the project as ‘Sabuj Sathi’.

The name ‘Sabuj Sathi’ – ‘Sabuj’, the word for ‘green’ also implies ‘children’ in Bengali, and ‘sathi’ means ‘companion’, hence ‘Sabuj Sathi’ or ‘children’s companion.’ The Chief Minister has created the logo for the project as well, which consists of a young boy running, with two spinning bicycle wheels alongside his legs.

The scheme covers all children of the state including boys and girls from 9th to 12th class. The State’s Finance Department has already sanctioned the money; the distribution via schools is going to commence in due course of time.

One of the landmark schemes of the Trinamool Congress Government, under which bicycles have been distributed to girl students, so that they can travel safely. Now distributing bicycles is going to be extended to all students, marking another high in the State Government’s efforts towards improving the state of education.

Indian bicycle major Hero Cycles has bagged an order of 750,000 bicycles from the West Bengal government, which will be distributed to students of class 9 to 12 in the state.

This the largest ever government order to any bicycle manufacturer, Hero Cycles said in a statement. The company has decided to ramp up its production capacities to keep up with the demands from its current distribution network, as well as to fulfill the new order, it added.

“This clearly shows the confidence that the state government has bestowed upon us. This massive order is not only going to benefit Hero Cycles but also help various big and small vendors and suppliers to associate with the company,” Hero Cycles Chairman & MD Pankaj Munjal said.

Under the Sabuj Sathi project, the state government will be distributing 30 lakh bicycles among the students of classes 9th and 10th who belong to government-aided schools. An e-tender will be floated by the Backward Classes Welfare department to invite the firms in order to supply bicycles. Cycles will be received by the students who get promoted to classes 9th and 10th in 2017. However, the order was issued in the month of March to the selected firms.

Our school is proud to inform you all that bicycle distribution will be carried out on 20th September in the school playground. Our chief guest will be Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who will distribute the bicycles to each student.
