Report on the rampant sale of cut fruits in Hyderabad

Readily cut fruits have become a trend nowadays, especially for the people who find it hard or lazy to cut them and have it. It is being sold by local vendors on the roadside and also packaged cut-fruits in the supermarkets. A survey showed that the sale of the cut fruits was 60% higher than the sale of whole fresh fruits. Apart from the cut fruits, cut vegetables, readymade sprouts, etc. are also made available in the markets in the name of making life easier for the busy people.

The marketing funda of these cut fruits is to save time and to have healthy food like fruits, salads etc., on the go. However, there have been many reports that have suggested that these cut fruits and vegetables are far from being healthy.

The roadside vendors keep the cut fruits in the open and it is readily available for contamination by insects, germs, dust, human touch, etc. There is also a possibility that the vendors and shopkeepers do not wash the fruits properly before cutting them. Also, the exposure of cut fruits to air for a long time deprives it of all its nutrients due to oxidation. These could lead to adverse health issues and diseases.

Many cases of stomach ailments, gastroenterology issues, contagious diseases like typhoid, cholera etc. have been reported and they have been due to consuming ready-cut fruits and vegetables.

Therefore, the Health Department and many doctors and specialists have made it clear that it is better to consume clean washed and freshly cut fruits and vegetables rather than having cut fruits.

It might take a few extra minutes to clean and cut a fresh fruit when compared to consuming a ready cut fruit. However, it is worth all the few minutes. After all, health is the real wealth.
