Ranchi is the largest city in the sate of the Jharkhand and is usually seen as a abode of peace and calm in an otherwise restive country. It is also popular as the home town of India's legendary captain, MS Dhoni.
However, in recent years, there have been instances of communal violence and riots between the local Hindu and Muslims leaders, usually sparked by a rumour or problems between religious leaders for power.
