Super Cyclone Amphan is hurtling towards West Bengal and Odisha and it is likely to make landfall in the afternoon or evening tomorrow (Wednesday, May 20). As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone is expected to cross West Bengal–Bangladesh coasts between Digha (West Bengal) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh) close to Sundarbans tomorrow with maximum sustained wind speed of 155-165 kmph, gusting to 185 kmph.

IMD Director-General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra told a press briefing Tuesday evening that Amphan is the most intense cyclone - the second super cyclone - which has developed in the Bay of Bengal since 1999. “Its wind speed in the sea right now is 200-240 kmph. It is moving towards north-northwestward direction,” Mohapatra said.

As of 11:30 am today, Cyclone Amphan lay centred as an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm over west central Bay of Bengal about 420 km nearly south of Paradip (Odisha), 570 km south-southwest of Digha (West Bengal) and 700 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh). “It moved north-northeastwards with a speed of 17 kmph during the past 06 hours,”

Coastal Odisha is likely to receive light to moderate rainfall at most places, while there is a forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara and Bhadrak districts. Further, isolated heavy falls are likely over Jajpur, Balasore, Cuttack, Mayurbhanj, Khordha and Puri districts today (May 19) while isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over north coastal Odisha (Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, Kendrapara and Keonjhargarh districts) tomorrow (May 20).

Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts in Odisha are likely to experience gale wind speed reaching 75 to 85 kmph gusting to 95 kmph tomorrow morning onwards. The wind speed will gradually increase to 100 to 110 kmph gusting to 125 kmph along and off the above-mentioned districts. Further, squally wind speed reaching 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph is likely to prevail over Puri, Khordha, Cuttack, Jajpur districts of Odisha tomorrow.
